2018 Lake Superior Performance Rally - Day 1

Well today definitely did not go according to plan... After starting the car in parc expose we saw some coolant burning off through the hood vents. After a quick look it seemed that there was some residual on the header from a minor repair (resituation and tightening of the lower radiator hose clamp) yesterday. However, after driving only a mile up the road we saw increased steam and a rising coolant gauge. We flew into a nearby gas station where we found that the 90deg hose off of the water pump had ruptured.
We called to our service crew, who was already an hour away at service that we would likely need help. While he was on his way we went for a stroll down to Advance Auto to see what would work. We found a hose for a WRX that we were able to cut and make work. Having a few basic tools in the car we were amazingly able to complete the repair and refill with coolant all before the crew showed up. There was only minor bloodshed which was a big plus. 👍
We knew we had just enough time that if we got back to service, we could re-enter in roughly the same order that we started. We pulled in, explained the situation to the stewards who immediately turned us around to leave service back in the pack. We were told that our first 2 stages would be super rally stages.
After heading back out, catching a car on our first stage and quickly moving up the field, we were starting to feel really good. Taking it easy at night since the other competitors had seen some of the stages during the day first. The soft areas of the road were very unpredictable and sometimes flung the car sideways but we held it together and hopefully put together some mediocre times.
After returning for the second service, we got told that the stewards made a mistake and that we actually DNFd the day because we did not start the first stage. Oh well. We decided to call it quits with that news instead of risking the car further at night for the remaining 2 stages. We shall return tomorrow morning at parc expose in L'anse!!!
